Intimacy Coaching vs. Sex Therapy: What's the Difference?

These two words get used interchangeably, and they shouldn't be. They describe different kinds of work, with different goals, done by people with different training.

Sex therapy

Sex therapy is a licensed clinical practice. Sex therapists are trained to diagnose and treat sexual dysfunction, trauma, and conditions in the framework of mental health care. They can write notes that interact with your medical record. They often work slowly and historically.

Intimacy coaching

Intimacy coaching is not licensed and does not diagnose anything. It is structured forward work on the lived experience of intimacy — confidence, desire, presence, communication, how you actually move in the moment. It tends to be faster, more practical, and more private.

When to choose which

If you suspect a clinical condition, a trauma response, severe erectile dysfunction, or anything medical, see a physician and a licensed therapist first. If you're a functional adult who wants confidence, desire, or connection to move — coaching is usually the right entry point, and the two work well together.
